“I got into electronic music through the commodore 64 demoscene around ‘88 / ‘89 and listening to juan atkins, derrick may and the streetsounds electro compilations. In 1990 I bought my first record ‘lfo - lfo [warp]’ and was given a tape of ‘cyclone - a place called bliss [network]’ by a friend who’s cousin had written the track. Hearing electro, techno and bleep n bass for the first time blew me away and by 1992 i started writing my own trax using a copy of ‘octamed’ on a commodore Amiga 500 and an 8-bit sampler….

It was raving at the warehouse parties of Leicester’s BWPT sound-system in the uk, and in particular the live techno being played, that inspired me to invest in extra gear in addition to doing the weekly record shop. In the late nineties there were so many wicked parties to go to that it took a while to build up a home studio….

 

ASH VANGUARD

A young chap by the name of ASH who runs a couple of late night reggae/Dub/Jungle nights round the town of Leicester, also into street, also a trainee teacher and classroom assistant at uplands primary school which is cool and a street artist who stencils under the vanguard name, although i haven’t been out painting in time as its hard finding someone to watch my back, any offers? :)…

CounterAction, Not A Blind Reaction

COUNTERACTION is a new UK roots reggae/dub label in the works.

It has come to be as a natural response to the pressures, the highs and lows of living in Babylon (in both the mental and the physical sense).

It aims to provide a vehicle for positive, educational, spiritual creative musical expression contributed by singers and players principally from Leicester and the UK (but not only), particularly taking notice of artists that perhaps have not had enough or as much exposure as deserved…

I-MITRI

Record, write and gig as part of “AmP” (Atiko Minus Project), a band from Athens, Greece (i ve been playing with iwisa and subsonic ever since day one!) and we also run a reggae-dub label together called AMP Outernational.

When in London i usually find myself linking with shortie and walker on the drumming and writing tunes Dub Providers roots mission, look out for any release available on the Nuff Powa label.
In Leicester (where i generally can be found most of the time), when not involved with CounterAction matters, i have in the past operated and selected for Root’ Sound (Leicester Reggae/Dub Collective Sound System) usually around Braunstone Gate at the Twisted Toucan, Looking Glass, Keos, Music Cafe and occasionally Sumo.
“Skeletor“ a livetronics collaboration with mystical Myoptik (Ping) is always up to something..
Also, often contribute to the Vibronics Dub Family, and have played repeater/akette and drums on several riddims, most notably the recent 10″ Scoops release Mama Africa (A Side) and Tranquility (B Side).
Big up for all the support and guidance to Steve and all the extended vibronics family (man like richie roots, echo ranks, madu messenger, parvez.. maximum respect!)

LAURA HEATH

DJ/promoter LAURA HEATH’s love affair with electronic music began when she started listening to pioneers of the sound such as Swayzak, Adam beyer, Guy Gerber and Carl Craig. Laura studied their sounds and used her knowledge to create her own blend of melodic techno. From that moment Laura hasn’t looked back, and has since graced the decks at some of the world’s finest clubs such as Turnmills, The Cross and Privilege…..

The inspiration came from trying to revive and honor the tradition of the UK Roots N Dub dancehall in Leicester. We aim to unify in order to achieve this.. To come together regardless of race, creed or background so we can enjoy a positive dance!

VIBRONICS

 

It was the joint discovery of the ABA-SHANTI-I SOUND SYSTEM and digitally sequenced music that first inspired STEVE VIBRONICS to try his hand at building dub tunes. A minimal studio was put together at home during 1995 using the most basic of equipment - a dilapidated 16 track mixer, reverb and echo units, a couple of synths and a an Atari computer - all mixed - all mixed down onto cassette tape. One such tape was given to Aba-Shanti-I after one of his legendary sessions at the Arches in Vauxhall, London.

By the next dance it had been cut onto dub plate and the sounds of Vibronics were unleashed in the form of the thunderous ‘Universal Love’. Soon after links were forged with the Leeds Sound System Iration Steppas, this time with the hard stepping ‘Dub Discovery’ rhythm. Since those early days VIBRONICS have maintained strong links with Roots Sound Systems. As anyone who has heard Aba, Iration, Shaka or Tubbys will confirm that Dubs are best heard through 18″ scoop bass bins with the kind of volume and power that will shake a building to it’s foundations….
